Week of March 28 - April 1

 Families,

I hope your week is off to a great start! Today we will start the fourth quarter of 2021-2022 school year! It has been a great year and let’s make sure we finish the school year strong! Below are some updates for this school week. 

Health Guidance: 

At the beginning of March, the WCPSS school board removed the mask mandate and removed many of the health procedures from elementary schools. The past few weeks, Underwood has provided opportunities for students to interact more often at recess. In the next week, more students will be eating in the cafeteria at a given time. We have seen high success with our structures and would like to increase students' socialization during the lunch time. 

EOG Dates:

The state of North Carolina requires end of grade and end of course starting in third grade. Below are the dates and grade levels.

The Broughton Arts Department is excited to invite you to the first annual Broughton Arts Festival. Saturday, March 26th 11am-3pm, on BHS front lawn and parking lot. There will be live performances from Wind Ensemble (11:30AM), Chicago the Musical (12:00PM), Orchestra (12:30PM),Vocal Music (1:00PM), Theater (1:30PM),Dance (Caps Crew, Company and Ensemble)(2:00PM), and Jazz Ensemble (2:00PM) and Art Shows from IB Visual Art Seniors, and the other Visual Arts classes; Interactive booths for dance, art and theater, small ensemble performances from performing art students and vendors selling jewelry, pottery and other items; food trucks from Tacos Las Gringas, Loco Pops and Bull City Eatery. Arts Pleasure - What do you do with an idea?

 Families, 

ArtsPleasure is back and we want to know - What do you do with an idea?  After a 2-year hiatus, Underwood's Arts Department is excited to offer 2 nights of events that will celebrate and showcase all that our Unicorns have been learning in their arts electives this quarter.  Join us online Wednesday, March 23 at 6:00pm for a virtual event featuring students in Dr. Booth's Orchestra electives, Srta. McKenna's Spanish electives, and Ms. Robinson's PE electives.  The evening will also include featured artist Caroline Jones, violist.  Join us the following evening, Thursday, March 24 at Underwood for live performances by selected arts electives.  The students in Ms. Spiggle's Rhythm Band, Sea to Shining Sea, and Storytime for Young Listeners electives will perform in the media center at 6:00pm.  Mrs. Frasier's Modern Dance, Exploring Ballet, Tap, and Dance Ensemble electives will perform at 6:30pm on stage in the gym.  Mr. Richardson's Band students will perform at 7:00pm in the media center.  And last but not least, Ms. Spiggle and Mr. Beeman's 2nd & 3rd Grade Theatre Production students will perform at 7:30pm on the stage in the gym.   We look forward to seeing you there!

SSA (Single Subject Acceleration) 

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of placing a student in a higher-grade level in one subject area. Wow, what an exciting weekend! I notice a lot of our families were able to come out and enjoy the 2022 Spring Fling on Saturday! It was so good to see smiling faces on our playground. 

Per WCPSS school board starting March 7th, face covering and masks will be optional inside and outside of the school building. We have talked as staff that students and staff will have the option to wear face coverings and we will need to create a respectful environment for those that want to wear face coverings and those that don’t. Here is a document that shares so Q&A for face coverings. Underwood school staff are looking at potential modifying our school practices for recess and lunch based on updated guidelines.
