Thank you to our families for your continued support of our school! You all make
Underwood an amazing place to work and serve our community!

to all games, raffle tickets, or make donations anytime.  All are available for purchase on

Foundation Gala
Save the date for the Underwood Elementary’s Foundation Gala. It is March 1st at
7:00 at Whitaker & Atlantic. This is our annual fundraising night to support the Foundation
in its effort to provide funds to secure staff members to protect the integrity of the
school and maintain our programming at current levels. The event is a great way to
meet other Underwood Parents, bid of fun experience items ranging from gift cards
to local business to vacation package and give back to our school to support the school!

Spelling Bee
Congratulations to the 17 classroom Spelling Bee Winners,
after 32 rounds Kash H (4th grade) was the winner of the
spelling bee. Owen C (5th grade) finished runner-up.
Thank you to Alexandria Judge-Lenkeit for being our
pronouncer, Heather Callahan and Shannon Tant for
being our judges and Jennifer Page for organizing the event!

Wake Up and Read
Parents, please check your child’s bookshelf for any
books they may have outgrown!  Wake County has
kicked off it’s annual “Wake-Up and Read” campaign. This annual collection supports
students at 13 schools and various daycares around the county.  The goal is to
provide ten books to each child! Join Underwood by bringing in at least one gently used
book (it can be new) that would be suitable for a child/children from birth to age 12.
The book drop-off is at the front of the office. The campaign will end on February 15th!

Lockdown Practice
As part of the WCPSS processes, we will conduct our semesterly practice code red
lockdown in the next two weeks. Staff members will be going over the necessary
steps to prepare the students. I will send a letter to families the afternoon after that
we have conducted in the drill in collaboration with local law enforcement.

NC Check-ins / Mclass Mid Year Assessments
Students over the past couple of weeks and this week have been completing
mid-year assessments.

K-3 have been assessed in reading through MClass (a state based benchmark assessment).
You will be receiving a copy of your child’s MClass progress in the report card next week. If
you would like more information about this assessment, please look at the following resource.

Last week and this week students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will/have taken the math
NC Check-In from the state.  You will receive reports about your child’s progress in the next
few weeks.

If you have any questions about these assessments, please speak with your child’s teacher.

3rd Quarter Electives
Quarter 3 electives begin on Monday, January 28th!  We are looking forward to another
quarter of opportunities for students to explore their gifts and talents.  For any
elective questions, contact Ashley Cooper (acooper4@wcpss.net)

Nightly Reading and Report Cards
Second quarter report cards will be coming home in Tuesday Folders on February 5th.
Our teachers assess students based on the North Carolina Standard Course of
study in collaboration with WCPSS Standards Based Grading. In a collaborative effort,
we want to encourage you to read with your child/children for at least 20 minutes a
night, ask them questions about what they have read and conversations about their books.
Also, feel free to reach out to their teachers and find more resource to use with your students.

Wishing Well
Our staff is wishing Mrs. Mbalia since the beginning of January. She has been out
on Medical Leave since January 4th, it is unknown of when she will be returning to work.
As new information becomes available, it will be shared with the staff and families.
