PTA Stipend:  Thank you to our PTA for the first semseter stipend for our staff that has been used to purchase items for individual classrooms! 

Lost and Found -- We are getting ready to donate our lost and found items as they have been in there for a few weeks now. Before we donate them is their a student in your class that could benefit from some gently used clothes, if so click on this link to add their name. 

ECU Offers New Online Master of Arts Program - Apply by Feb. 1
East Carolina University is offering a one-year online Master of Arts in Education program for practicing teachers. A new cohort for elementary school teachers begins in Summer 2018. The cohort for middle school teachers begins in fall 2018. Middle school teachers in the program may choose from a concentration in English, Math, Social Studies or Science. Elementary teachers entering the summer cohort may choose from Teacher Leadership, Academically and Intellectually Gifted or Teaching English as a Second Language. The deadline to apply for either cohort is Feb. 1, 2018. GRE or MAT test waivers are possible if an applicant has been teaching for 10 or more years or if the applicant is an ECU graduate with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Here comes the Bus App - Have a student that rides a bus? It would be helpful to download - Here comes the Bus app. You will need the school district code 67500 and a student’s WCPSS identification number. Follow the bus in the morning and afternoon as it picks up and drops off the student. You can also see when they arrive or leave Underwood at - Arrival and dismissal

Celebrations  
  • Mrs. Peaden and Mrs. Judge-Lenkeit continued leadership leading our SIP team!
  • Mrs. Wehmann matted, laminated and cut our Q2 elective signs.
  • Mr. Marrow and Mrs. Merritt for continued to keep our learning spaces clean, we hope to have our hired part-time custodian working upstairs soon. Paperwork has been turned in we are waiting for HR approval.  
  • Sunshine Club for providing coffee and donuts for our business meeting!
  • PTA for sponsoring our half-day Teacher Planning days. Teachers worked with Mrs. Judge-Lenkeit on curriculum unpacking work and creating units of studies for second quarter. 
  • Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Rachel Frasier!
  • Congratulations to our Teacher Assistant of the Year: Mr. Lance Lehning!

Foundation Football Meet-Up - Thank you to those that attended our Monday Night Foundation Meet-up at Rudinos last night. Moonlight Reading -- We are excited for our Book Fair! Save the date for November 28th for our Moonlight Reading celebration at Underwood! Our staff is excited about reading to the students during this evening event! 

Lockdown Drill Follow-up - Our staff and students did an awesome job on the lockdown drill!  The three uniform officers said it was "one of the best that they had seen"!

Unicorn Trot: Thank you to all of the volunteers and parents that came out to cheer on our students during the Unicorn Trot. It was a very successful event!  

Schools and Here Comes the Bus - Here comes the Bus App is up and running at Underwood Elementary. Parents will need the school district code 67500 and a student’s WCPSS identification number. Follow the bus in the morning and afternoon as it picks up and drops off the student.

Collaboration

Grounds Day - Thank you to parents, students and staff members for helping with our grounds day last weekend. We were able to spread mulch, clean up many shrubbery and debris. We will be looking for assistance at our next clean up day to clean up our playground. We also need your help to reduce the number of dogs that are on our campus. We were made aware of a dog group that comes to our school on some Saturdays. While we appreciate our neighborhood and being a part of the community, our playground is being impacted by the increase traffic. 

It's a Readvolution!
In recognition of the 20th Anniversary of the Carolina Hurricanes and the WCPSS Strategic Plan of Vision 2020, we are teaming up to bring Readvolution to all all of our elementary schools. The partnership will support a community wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of the school. Information has been sent home in Tuesday folders. Reflections Art Contest
It is time again for the popular PTA Reflections Art Contest! This year the theme is "Within Reach" and students may enter in dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. All participants will be recognized in an awards ceremony at school and will be eligible to advance to the county competition and beyond. What a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves and to receive positive recognition for their original works of art. Students of all grade levels and abilities are encouraged to participate and may enter as many times as they wish. Broughton High School -- From Principal Ashburn: It is never too early to start thinking about your child's high school experience! Broughton Global Studies Magnet High School, which is an International Baccalaureate World School, will be hosting several events for prospective Broughton base and magnet students and their families. On November 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, there will be an Open House that will include guided tours of the building and opportunities to meet with staff members, parents, and students. Also, please visit the Broughton website to find more information about upcoming school tours during the school day as well as about the Broughton Global Showcase that will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 on January 17. Unicorn Trot Pep Rally- We will have our Unicorn Trot Pep Rally on Friday the 13th:
K-2 at 2:15 and 3-5 at 3:00.

Collaboration 

Grounds Day is Saturday! Come out on Saturday anytime between 8:30-12:00 and help us spruce up the grounds! We will be picking up trash, debris, cutting limbs, etc. and working with a landscaper (parent) to remove shrubs, etc.

Critical Thinking

Readvolution - Wake County is partnering with the Carolina Hurricanes as part of the 20th anniversay for the Hurricanes and WCPSS 2020 Strategic Plan. In this Tuesday folder will be a letter detailing the tracking system, incentives and other items. For every book a student reads, they will write on a paper puck the title of the book as as their name, which will be added to the Hurricanes hockey banner located outside of the multipurpose room.

School Family PicnicWe are excited about seeing our families at School Family Picnic on Thursday night. You can pack a dinner or purchase food from one of the three food trucks (along with Kona Ice) that will be on site on Thursday the 28th from 5:30-7:00. We will have Peace rock painting, inflatables and other fun things to do with your Underwood family!

Interims will be going home on Tuesday, September 26th.  Please contact your child's teacher with any concerns.

Collaboration 

We need your help!  Bring the whole family out to Underwood on Saturday, October 14th from 8:30am-12pm to help with our first Grounds Day of the year!  Together we will tackle small projects to spruce up our campus (picking up trash/debris, pulling weeds, trimming limbs, etc)

Critical Thinking 

MDA Lock-up - On September 27th, Mr. Shillings will be "locked up". Every day, kids and adults are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that take away the most basic freedoms – the freedom to walk, talk, hug and even breathe. Let's celebrate!  Our United Arts Council Grant was fully funded.  This allows us to provide multiple opportunities to invite artists to perform for our students and showcase the arts.  Thank you to Laura Urben and Julia Mastropaolo for all of their efforts in leading our Cultural Arts efforts!

Growing up in the Digital Age -- Special screening of "Screenager" - Viewing details. This is not a school (nor WCPSS) sponsored event -  called Screenagers and is about the effects of screentime on kids.  It's completely secular.  They are providing childcare for children 3rd grade and younger.  It's recommended that children in 4th grade and above watch with their parents.

Volunteer Registration - Are you planning on attending a field trip, volunteering during Unicorn Trot/other school events this year, or planning to volunteer in the classroom? Reminder for parents and family members to sign up to be a volunteer through the WCPSS volunteer registration every year. This has to be done in a Wake County School. Please see a staff member at the front desk or in the media center to assist you.

Girls on the Run (GTR) - Informational flyer for grades 3-5 -- 98% of parents/guardians believe that participating in GOTR was a valuable and enjoyable experience for their GOTR girl. “The curriculum was incredible. Classroom and Elective report cards will go home on Friday June 9th.  

Field Day - field day is June 7th for k - 2 from 9:30 - 11:30 and 3-5 1:00 - 3:00. We are in need for additional volunteers for 3-5 field day. If available please fill out - We are in need of several volunteers: Field Day Sign Up  and Field Day Volunteer Reminders  We like to have 15-20 stations and need two volunteers at each station.

Creativity 


At the Arts Integration Institute, teachers have the opportunity to work with extraordinary teaching artists who understand how classrooms really work. Teachers learn how to think creatively, collaborate, and invigorate their classrooms. There will be six unique workshops designed to integrate arts and non-arts Common Core and NC Essential Standards. Workshops are fun and interactive!​ If you are interested in attending (for free) June 19-23, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, please let Ashley know asap.

Collaboration 

Mr. Shillings is seeking feedback for Assistant Principal search. If you would be willing to provide feedback in characteristics and traits for our new AP (starting 2017-18 school year) - please complete the following form - Feedback form to provide that information.  
Some of the roles for our assistant principal are observing/evaluating teachers, provide instructional techniques and strategies, facilities management, behavior support and implementing Student Code of Conduct, student support, and along with other roles and responsibilities.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle 5k - Meredith Brown is a junior at Broughton High School, as well as a Joyner Elementary School and Daniels Middle School alumna. Over the past year, she has worked closely with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. The race will be on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 8:00 am at Dorothea Dix Park! Please join in helping this wonderful cause! EOGs - EOG start this Friday (see schedule below). All students in grades 3-5 will be taking the End of Grade Assessments per state policy. If parents have questions or concerns they need to contact Mr. Shillings.

Quarter 4 electives end on Thursday, May 25th.

Number Drummer was a great and interactive performance for our students. Thank you to our PTA for this opportunity. Here is an example for the k-2 work session.


Creativity

Principal and the Pea Come support our students and the Arts Team at our K-1 Performance, Principal and the Pea on Thursday, May 25th at 7pm.

Passion Action Project: Some Art of Animation elective students are closing out their quarter with a Passion Action Project and need some donations. Along with animated PSA about the worth and talents of homeless and displaced people, they are constructing care packages for them. They really want to know they can make a difference. A drop off box will be in the carpool area this week only as well as in the learning lab for anything you or your students may have to contribute including but not limited to: List of items. Thank you

Exciting news!  We will be purchasing $4,000 worth of new books for our Leveled Book Room. These books will be used by teachers when teaching small groups of students k-5 to increase their reading comprehension. Thank you to our PTA for their financial support to make this happen.

Parent Portal - We are excited to announce that student transportation information can now be found in one single location, Home Base, also known as Powerschool. In order to provide the highest level of customer service to our families we are asking those of you who do not yet have a Powerschool account to stop by the school office to complete the necessary form.  You can find more information at www.wcpss.net/student-information.  Once you have a Powerschool account, look for the transportation tab to see your student’s transportation status and type. If your student is a bus rider, stop and route information is also provided.

Mrs. Nance - As of June 30th Mrs. Nance will be retiring from Underwood Elementary. It has been a pleasure working along side her for the past two years as well as five years earlier in our careers.  I wish her well.
 
EOG Proctors - EOGs begin on May 26th and we continue to be in need of proctors from May 26th - June 2nd. If interested please email Mrs. Nance or Mrs. Churchill.

Five Points 5k  - The Third Annual Five Points 5K/Health Fair is May 20, 2017. Collaboration

Science Olympiad - Congratulations to our Science Olympiad Teams Varsity finished in first place and after a review there was a change to one of the events and the results showed that our Junior Varsity also finished in first place. I was very impressed with the hard work, dedication, and perseverance in working on their science skills. Thanks again to all of the volunteers and awesome coaches!

Number Drummer - Number Drummer is the ultimate math and music experience. See it! Feel it! Hear it! Play it! Number Drummer Live is a one-of-a-kind interactive show that has the entire audience “drumming up” mathematics for an awesome “surround sound” musical performance! The show takes participants through an entertaining and engaging sequence of music and math skills needed to be a Number Drummer and play in the show’s final performance. It is an awesome display of math that is heard as a rhythmic work of art. Special schedule for Friday, May 19 is here.

Interims for Quarter 4 go home with students on Tuesday, May 9th.

Friday May 12th is a workday. 

Parent Academy for our ESL parents on Tuesday, May 9th (5:30-7:00).  Families will receive a session from the ESL department and we have also secured books for the students to take home for the summer!

Five Points 5k  - The Third Annual Five Points 5K/Health Fair is May 20, 2017. After months of incredibly hard and thorough work on the part of our stellar curriculum team – along with critical input from you, your teachers, parents and the community, the new ELA curriculum has been announced!  Expeditionary Learning (EL).  EL is an open-source literacy curriculum written by and for teachers. It was created to address the shifts in the Common Core standards as well as address the future needs of students competing in a global community.  The county will roll this out with third grade in 2017-2018 and 4th the following year.  5th grade will adopt the resource in 2019-2020.
